to the Honor System Website. This site is designed to provide parents with
information about the Honor System at UNC and ways in which parents can
encourage and support their students in making the right decisions related to
academic and social situations.
The
Honor System represents a partnership forged and renewed by students, faculty,
and staff at Carolina over many generations, as the best means available to
maintain high standards of academic integrity and student conduct within our
community. The system serves several functions including the articulation of
important norms regarding the pursuit of truth and respect for others who have
come together for that purpose. It places squarely on the shoulders of students
the responsibility for self and peer discipline as cornerstones of governance,
imparting lessons crucial to those who will emerge as citizen-leaders.
The
Honor System provides students with informal education in many venues around
campus, and assists instructors by providing information that can aid them in
preventing misconduct. The existence of the system, including the serious
sanctions that can be imposed for student misconduct, also serves as a
deterrent to those who may be tempted to cut corners at times. Finally, the
system serves as the means of intervening in the evident of student misconduct,
through a structured process in which facts are found and sanctions are
imposed.
